Digital Solutions in Banking as a Catalyst for Sustainable Development

Abstract: As technology increasingly affects every aspect of our lives, it seems to be a rightful expectation that the process of digitalisation should take place in a sustainable manner. Sustainable digital transformation requires not only the development and the use of digital tools but also takes advantage of their potential for the implementation of ESG issues.

Digital transformation in the banking sector has brought about substantial changes in the fi- nancial industry worldwide. This paradigm shift has been driven by two primary factors. On the one hand, there is an escalating customer demand for advanced technologies that offer con- venience, speed, and security. On the other hand, the widespread accessibility of the Internet has made digital banking solutions feasible and desirable.

The research is based on the qualitative content analysis (QCA) of sustainability reports of OTP Bank, UniCredit Bank and CIB Bank in Hungary. By determining the relevant concepts and con- ceptual relations on the basis of the clusters and their assigned material topics applied in the reports, the paper aims to explore their link to digital transformation and their compliance with the corresponding SDGs. The findings indicate that, based on the sustainability reports ana- lysed, the digitalisation efforts of banks show limited commitment to sustainability.
