Abstract: Food waste is one of the most pressing environmental, economic, and social challenges of our time. In Hungary, a significant portion of food waste originates at the household level, which is why this study aims to explore some of the correlations related to food waste through quantitative research. The primary goal was to examine how respondents perceive sustainability, their food consumption, and waste. The research was conducted using a non-random sampling method, with a sample size of 798, which is not representative, but the authors aimed to approximate a random sampling approach as closely as possible. The results of the study indicated that the extent of food waste is strongly correlated with demographic factors, attitudes, and habits. It was found that education and environmental awareness play a crucial role in reducing waste. The findings of this research can contribute to the development of targeted policy measures and social campaigns aimed at reducing food waste and promoting more sustainable lifestyles in Hungary.
